It is definitely a process, but highly worth the investment!! It is really amazing what you can learn if you ask employees for their input! They feel empowered and you get a solution… So, if you are experiencing any challenges in the work environment it may surprise you to ask your employee (s) for a solution….many times they work well with little or no tweaking!
As a small business owner for over 30 years, this practice has worked well for me and my employees!! They have more control over / ownership in their roles and I have enhanced and more efficient processes.
Some small business owners see compliance as a necessary evil or may even think that because they are good to their employees, they don’t worry about taking the appropriate steps to dot the I’s and cross the T’s in regards to various compliance topics. It seems clear that they have never had an employee sue them and sometimes that is what it takes to open their eyes.
When policies and expectations are clear in the work environment it reduces legal exposure; which is a good thing. If you are looking to dot those I’s and Cross those T’s an HR Checkup may be just the thing to know where you are on track and where you might need to get on track.

Did you know that a poor onboarding experience for a new employee can be the reason that they leave your company and not very long after they are hired?
I have recently had another consultant tell me a story about a small business where onboarding was pretty much non-existent. Not only that, there was no orientation, no training, very little expectations or goals put in place and most of the learning was to be done on their own and finding the resources was up to them as well. It was difficult for the new employee to take responsibility for their role and do a good job. They did not feel set up for success and left the company within 90 days of being hired by the company.
This turnover was costly and in the six figures and could have been avoided if there was some onboarding including, training, setting of expectations and giving the employee the authority to carry out defined tasks and thereby giving the new employee the tools to succeed.
Do you know what turnover is costing your small business?? It might make you sick to find out. Some experts say up to three times their salary while others have different formulas. No matter how you do the calculations, it is very costly.
Studies indicate that an effective onboarding process reduces the ramp up time, increases earlier productivity and helps the employee feel connected to their role, their teammates and the company. If this is important to your small business, it is a relatively small but significant investment in your most valuable asset; your employees.
