With all of the hiring that has recently happened, it is important as an employer to pay attention to your RETENTION efforts.

Hiring is critical for growth this year and every year and it is interesting what economists see happening with unemployment in the near future….The companies that can attract and hire and retain top performers are the winners!! Being a small business doesn’t have to mean that you can’t compete!! You CAN compete successfully!
The projected slowdown in 2019 is a side effect of the trade war; a key component of Trump’s economic policies. We ended 2018 with unemployment of 3.7% nationally and 3.3% in MA according to the US Economic Outlook for 2019 and beyond. They project that 2019 unemployment will fall to 3.5% and rise very slightly in 2020 to 3.6%. See link: https://www.thebalance.com/us-economic-outlook-3305669
The Jobs report which is in the BLS (Bureau of Labor Statistics) publication of occupational outlook over a period of 10 years. This one 2016-2026 is interesting. It reports in great detail about each industry and occupation. BLS expects total employment to increase by 20.5 million jobs between 2010 and 2020. They predict that 88% of occupations will experience growth; the fastest will be in healthcare, personal care and social assistance and construction. They also say jobs requiring a Master’s degree will grow fastest and those requiring a high school diploma will grow the slowest https://www.bls.gov/ooh/fastest-growing.htm
I think this means at least three things to employers. They will have to compete more for talent. Companies will have to do more training and re-training and that if companies get better at RETENTION, then they will be the winners. If you need help with any of these strategies, please feel free to reach out for options, guidance and solutions.
With all of the hiring that has recently happened and still continues to go on in 2019, it is important as an employer to pay attention to your RETENTION efforts. If you are trying to grow your company and you focus more of your attention on hiring and put retention on the back burner, it could hurt your efforts to grow your revenues.
What do you think? Would one or more work for your company? Which one (s)?? If you need help, let me know. I think a stay interview would be great to also see the different generations in the workplace may have some different thoughts on why they would stay or not!!
